PUNJABI WEDDING:

India is a well-known country, recognized for its different culture which varies from state to state. Weddings are one of the biggest events in India and are organized in a different manner which varies state and religion-wise. When we talk about Punjabi weddings a full entertainment package comes to our mind with many rituals. Some of them are:-

Pre-wedding traditions:

Rokka (pre-engagement)

Roka is one of the main functions that is organized before an Indian wedding. The engagement ceremony is like a commitment for both the bride and groom’s families.

Kurmai (engagement)

Engagement is a critical piece of a Punjabi wedding. The bride is draped with a chunni (designer scarf), which is usually very ornate. This occasion also includes the changing of rings between the bride and groom.

Dholki/sangeet

There is a sangeet event organized by the bride family, in which the groom’s closest family members are invited. For this, hire DJs and host a dance, with dinner.

Mehndi

The last major function just before the marriage is to apply mehndi (temporary henna) to the hand of the bride and groom along with relatives.

Common rituals

Rituals at the bride’s home-

Choora: This ceremony is held on the wedding day at the bride’s house. All the relatives give their wishes by touching the choora which is gifted by the girl mama for her future married life.

Mayian: This ceremony is held one day before the Punjabi wedding. This mayian happens at night and is celebrated according to which part of Punjab the families belong from.

Vatna/ Haldi: Vatna ceremony means that the bride and groom have to apply turmeric powder and mustard oil mix paste all over the body, to make them more beautiful.

Ghara gharoli: In this function, a design pitcher filled with water (ghadoli) is brought for the bride's bath by the bride bhabi (brother’s wife). Ghara gharoli ritual means that relatives go to a nearby temple and fill the pitcher with holy water for the bride's bath. And after that wedding dress is presented to them by their mama.

Jaggo: This function is very loud filled with joy, dance, fireworks, and food. Their bride Mami took a clay lamp on her head then she danced with other ladies while carrying a long stick.

Rituals at the groom’s home

Sarbala: In this ritual, a young nephew or cousin dressed the same as the groom. He is called the sarbalalshabbala (caretaker of the groom) which accompanies him.

Sehra: This ceremony takes place just after the groom is dressed up in wedding attire, then puja is performed. After this, the groom's sister ties the sehra on the groom’s head.

Ghodi Chadna: This is the final function at the groom's place before the wedding. In this ceremony, the groom climbs the horse, and money that is touched by the groom is distributed among the poor people.

Rituals at the marriage venue

Milni means “introductions”. In a Sikh marriage, Ardas is performed by the person in charge of looking after the Sikh scriptures, followed by the formal introductions of senior men in the families. For example, both eldest chachas (father's younger brother) will come together and exchange garlands of flowers. In the Milni ceremony, the girl's relatives give shagun (a token of good luck) to the groom's close relatives in descending order of age. Cash and clothes are gifted.

Jaimala/ Varmala: After the Milni ceremony, the bride and groom come in the mandap and exchange the varmala to state that they accept each other and love each other.

Kanyadaan and Phere: The bride’s father puts a ring on the boy's finger and gives his daughter's hand to the boy that represents that from now onwards girl responsibilities are of the groom. That ritual is called kanyadaan. After that, the bride and groom take 7 pheras which means 7 promises to each other before they start their life together. In a Sikh wedding, the bride and groom will walk in tow around the Guru Granth Sahib four times, called laavaan. This signifies they not only accept each other as one soul in two bodies but also as the Guru as the center of their marriage.

Joota chupai: In this function, the bride's sister and female friends hide the groom's shoes and demand money to give back shoes. It is a fun tradition.

Post-wedding rituals

Vidaai/ Doli: This ceremony marks the departure of the bride from her parental house.
